Focus: get to know your community

Having a strong connection with nature has been shown to be incredibly beneficial to everyone, especially children. This week’s challenge is a simple activity to practice instilling mindfulness and a sense of wonder about the changing seasons of the year.

How to Celebrate the Seasons of the Year with an Easy Craft

Homemade books are a fun and inexpensive way to bond with your children and create fun mementos in the process. We’ve used everything from scrap computer paper stapled together to $1 books from the Target Dollar Spot to printed picture books from Snapfish. Anything is possible.

  1. As the season begins to change, pick a tree (or something similar) and take a picture every week for the next few weeks.
  2. Print the pictures and paste them down. Document your child’s observations and discuss what other things happen as the season changes.
  3. Add drawings, keepsakes, or other notes depending on the age of your child.
  4. Repeat the activity at the same tree or location each equinox and solstice to make a year-long collection.
