Create a Family Mission Statement

Age: 4+

Time: 20 minutes

Materials: paper and pen

U

Focus: enhance communication

Have you ever thought about what your purpose as a parent might be? We often create visions for ourselves. Why not for the most important team of people in our lives?

If you have a partner, ask them to come up with a statement, then come back together and compare. If you have children about four or older, ask them what they think your purpose as parents is. You’ll probably get a good laugh out of their answer.

Together you are creating a vision of where your family is headed. The process of creating your statement should, at the very least, spark some conversation about what your values are.

Shared family values act as a touchstone for all your parenting decisions. When you know what you believe in, what your motivations are, and what your purpose is, you can more easily filter out all the noise of what the rest of the world says a “good parent” is or does.

Family Mission Statement Example

Our mission is to raise children who become caring and engaged adults who are
  1. economically self-sufficient;
  2. able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing;
  3. engaged in their communities and government representation;
  4. focused on learning, unlearning, and relearning at every opportunity;
  5. focused on the future.
