May is the perfect time to support your family wellness as it’s Family Wellness Month, a time to focus on the physical, emotional, and social health of families. So take some time to discuss what wellness means to your family and look at what wellness practices you can improve in your family to not only improve your health but also strengthen your family bonds.
When it comes to wellness, there are three areas: physical, emotional, and social. Let’s look at each area to see how you can support your family wellness.

A guide to support your family wellness
3 Ways to Support Your Family Wellness: Physical
The main thing most people think of when physical wellness is brought up is exercise, but it also includes getting enough sleep, eating healthy foods, staying hydrated, self-care, wearing safety equipment during potentially dangerous activities, preventative care, and your environment.
Simple ways to support your family’s physical wellness:
- Take a family walk after dinner
- Prioritize sleep
- Eat balanced meals
And remember, you’re not after perfection. Just do the best you can in whatever phase of parenthood you’re in. We all know sometimes the best we can do is stop and pick up fast food on the way home after a busy day. That’s okay.
Physical wellness isn’t about only one meal or one day. It’s about the big picture. Are you eating balanced, healthy meals when you’re able to? Are you moving your body through exercise or stretching a few days a week? It boils down to small, consistent habits that support your overall well-being.
3 Ways to Support Your Family Wellness: Emotional
Emotional wellness is about creating a safe and connected family. We all need space to express our feelings without judgment, especially our kids. When we model emotional awareness and openly talk about our emotions, we help our kids learn to manage their own emotions.
Simple ways to support your family’s emotional wellness:
- Have daily check-ins where you discuss the high and low of the day
- Share your own feelings when appropriate
- Create a calm-down space or have calm-down moments
3 Ways to Support Your Family Wellness: Social
Social wellness is about strengthening your family and community connections. Humans are social creatures, and although some people need more alone time than others, we all crave to be around other people and accepted by them.
It’s important that everyone in the family has a sense of belonging not only in the family but in the community as well, whether that’s at work, school, extracurricular activities, or hobbies.
Simple ways to support your family’s social wellness:
- Have regular family dinners or create family rituals
- Organize playdates or get involved in your community
- Decide on acts of kindness you’ll do together
Start Small and Check-In to Support Your Family Wellness
To keep your family’s wellness moving in the right direction, take some time periodically during a shared meal to check-in by encouraging a casual family conversation. You can ask questions to gauge how everyone is doing and share things you’ve noticed.
Just remember, family wellness isn’t about overwhelming everyone by trying to change everything at once. It’s about starting small. Pick one or two things the family wants to try to improve on this month.
When you’re intentional instead of trying to do more, your small moments can create big impacts.
